Peru inspires so much nostalgia when we reminisce about our time there. There was just so much to see and do. Not to mention to eat!
We had seriously under-researched what Peru had to offer. We had planned for maybe two or so weeks, making our way south from Lima to Cusco.
The reality was we found ourselves never wanting to leave! We ended up stretching our time here to nearly four weeks to try to make the most of everything this beautiful country had to offer.

Peru is a backpackers dream for budget-friendly travel. Even compared with the less-travelled Colombia and Ecuador we we still found the majority of accommodation, food and activities to be great value.
It is worth noting that we did travel through Peru during it’s shoulder season, coming from peak into low season.
Even Machu Picchu which many think costs an arm and a leg to do can be done on a budget! Again, it’s all about timing and planning. Or technically, a lack of, in our case.
In line with or prior research, we would say we averaged around $30-$40 USD, each per day, during our time in Peru. Not bad given we splurged on quite a few tours and activities over the month. Plus we ate out here more than in any other country in South America!
Food
Peruvian cuisine has received global attention over the last decade or so and is now recognised as a culinary hot-spot.
When we met travellers who had already passed through Peru, the most common phrase must have been, “Just wait until you try the food!”. As massive foodies, it’s an understatement to say we were excited.
Lomo saltado, arroz con mariscos, ceviche and papas a la huancaina are just some of the gastronomic delights to be discovered – and devoured – here.
The Journey
From the culture-rich streets of Lima we ventured south along the coast where the desert meets the ocean. We drank pisco, went sandboarding (sort of), trekked down one of the deepest canyons in the world and, finally, made our way to the famous Machu Picchu.
It was four weeks of feasting for our eyes and stomachs!
Peru certainly earns it’s place as a top destination for all types of travellers, catering to budget backpackers like ourselves, or those in search of more luxury. I think it’s safe to say we will return one day 🙂
