Mexico has to be one of the most all-round incredible countries we have had the opportunity to visit so far. And that’s no exaggeration. Honestly, we could see ourselves living there part-time if future opportunities allow!

What makes us fall so hard for Mexico then?

Firstly, it’s the people. We have found Mexicans to be a kind and welcoming nation, always the first to give you a wave and greet you with a smile. It’s genuinely uplifting.

Secondly, the food. And we seriously can’t hype this up enough; we went mad for the food here! Everything was delicious, fresh and so cheap! Tomatoes, limes, avocados, jalapenos, tortillas – all amazing, but it’s the seafood that really blew our minds.

Mexico, Baja, Mulege, Fish Tacos, Asadero Dany's,
Fish tacos are a staple along Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.

Additionally there’s the beautiful weather (it’s sunny, alot!), the stunning scenery and fascinating history that can be discovered across Mexico.

Cost

CURRENCY: Mexican Pesos
1 USD = 16 MXN
1 GBP = 21 MXN

*As of May 2024. The rate was 1 USD to 18 MXN when we visited in Feb ’20.

Mexico is a cheap country to visit. Accommodation, restaurants, groceries and even tours are a fraction of what you might expect to pay in the neighbouring States, for example.

Another bonus is that if you’re stuck, most vendors and establishments will accept US dollars which can be handy.

The Journey

Having never been to Mexico prior to May 2019 we technically ended up visiting three times within the next year. I say ‘technically’ as one of those occasions was a day trip to Boquillas from Big Bend National Park in Texas.

The Rio Grande runs through Big Bend NP forming the border between the States and Mexico

Our first taste of Mexico was an all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen. Not typically our kind of trip but as it was a family holiday, it seemed the most suitable option.

Needless to say, everyone’s expectations were surpassed and we had the most incredible week!

Staying on the Yucatán Peninsula is a great way to visit some of Mexico’s most well-known Mayan ruins such as Tulum and the above Chichen Itza (one of the new Seven Wonders of the World)

Our most recent visit formed part of our North America road trip in our self-converted camper. We crossed from California into Baja and drove hundreds of miles down the peninsula. This was easily one of the highlights of our 9 month adventure!

If you hadn’t already figured, we are big advocates for Mexico and totally recommend travellers add it to their bucket list. We hope our coming blogs on Mexico will inspire and aid your future ventures.

If nothing else, we hope you enjoy reading 🙂
